The Rolex Explorer II Ref. 226570 is a purpose-built professional watch designed for exploration and adventure. Introduced to mark the 50th anniversary of the Explorer II collection, the current-generation model retains the unmistakable character of its predecessors while incorporating Rolex’s latest-generation movement technology and subtle refinements to the case, dial and bracelet.
Presented in a substantial 42mm Oystersteel case, the Explorer II has a strong yet highly functional wrist presence. Its fixed stainless-steel bezel is engraved with a 24-hour scale, immediately distinguishing the Explorer II from Rolex’s rotating-bezel GMT models and reinforcing its origins as an instrument designed for explorers operating in environments where distinguishing day from night can be difficult.
The crisp white “Polar” dial is arguably the most iconic configuration of the Explorer II. Large black-outlined hour markers and hands create exceptional contrast against the white background, while Rolex’s Chromalight display provides excellent visibility in low-light conditions. The bright orange 24-hour hand provides the signature visual element of the watch and references the design language of the original Explorer II from 1971.
Working in conjunction with the fixed 24-hour bezel, the orange hand can indicate a second time zone independently from the conventional hour hand. The independently adjustable local hour hand makes the watch particularly practical for travel, while the date display at 3 o’clock is magnified by Rolex’s characteristic Cyclops lens.
Powering the Ref. 226570 is the Rolex Manufacture Calibre 3285, a self-winding mechanical movement offering approximately 70 hours of power reserve. The movement incorporates Rolex’s Chronergy escapement and Parachrom hairspring and carries Rolex’s Superlative Chronometer certification.
The watch is fitted to Rolex’s robust three-piece Oyster bracelet with an Oysterlock safety clasp and Easylink comfort-extension system. Its screw-down Twinlock crown and Oyster case provide water resistance to 100 metres, giving the Explorer II the durability expected from a Rolex Professional model.
