The TAG Heuer Grand Carrera Calibre 17 RS Ref. CAV511B is a sophisticated automatic chronograph that combines TAG Heuer’s deep motorsport heritage with a more refined and technically distinctive approach to the traditional racing chronograph. Introduced as part of the premium Grand Carrera collection, it draws inspiration from GT racing and automotive instrumentation.
Presented in a substantial 43mm stainless-steel case, the watch features an elegant silver dial with applied hour markers and a beautifully detailed multi-level construction. The combination of polished and brushed surfaces gives the Grand Carrera a more luxurious character while retaining the sporting presence associated with TAG Heuer.
The defining feature is TAG Heuer’s innovative Rotating System, or RS. Rather than conventional chronograph sub-dials with rotating hands, the watch uses dashboard-inspired rotating discs. Running seconds are displayed at 3 o’clock, while the chronograph minute counter is positioned at 9 o’clock. A date window at 6 o’clock completes the highly distinctive and symmetrical layout.
At its heart is the TAG Heuer Calibre 17 RS, a self-winding mechanical chronograph movement operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offering approximately 42 hours of power reserve. The movement is COSC-certified as a chronometer, reinforcing the Grand Carrera’s positioning as one of TAG Heuer’s more technically accomplished collections of its era.
A tachymeter scale is engraved into the fixed bezel, further emphasising the watch’s motorsport credentials, while sapphire crystal protects the dial. The sapphire exhibition caseback provides a view of the automatic movement and its distinctive finishing. Water resistance is rated to 100 metres.
Now discontinued, the TAG Heuer Grand Carrera Calibre 17 RS Ref. CAV511B remains a distinctive piece from an important period in TAG Heuer’s modern history.
