The Santos de Cartier Ref. WSSA0009 is a modern interpretation of one of the most historically significant designs in watchmaking. Originally conceived by Louis Cartier for pioneering aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, the Santos has evolved into one of Cartier’s most recognisable timepieces, combining its distinctive geometric case with unmistakable Parisian elegance.
The watch is presented in the Large configuration, with a 39.8mm stainless-steel case. Its signature square bezel, exposed screws and softly curved case profile create the architectural appearance that defines the Santos, while the combination of brushed and polished surfaces gives the watch an elegant yet contemporary presence.
The silvered opaline dial is quintessential Cartier, featuring bold black Roman numerals, a railway-style minute track and elegant blued-steel sword-shaped hands. A discreet date window is positioned at 6 o’clock, maintaining the symmetry and refinement of the dial while providing useful everyday functionality.
At its heart is the Cartier Manufacture Calibre 1847 MC, a self-winding mechanical movement. The watch is protected by sapphire crystal and offers 100 metres of water resistance, giving the Santos considerably more everyday versatility than its elegant appearance might suggest.
The stainless-steel bracelet is an integral part of the Santos design, with its exposed screw detailing continuing the distinctive aesthetic of the bezel. Cartier’s QuickSwitch system allows the bracelet to be easily interchanged, while the SmartLink system enables convenient adjustment of the bracelet without conventional tools.
