The IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph TOP GUN Ref. IW389001 is a commanding professional pilot’s chronograph that combines IWC’s long-standing aviation heritage with the advanced use of black ceramic. Inspired by the elite U.S. Navy fighter-weapons programme, the TOP GUN collection has a distinctly military character, with an emphasis on functionality, durability and exceptional legibility.
The watch is housed in a substantial 44.5mm black ceramic case. The ceramic construction provides excellent scratch resistance while also reducing weight compared with a similarly sized steel case. Its matt black finish gives the watch a purposeful, stealth-like appearance that perfectly complements the TOP GUN aesthetic.
The black cockpit-inspired dial features bold white Arabic numerals, luminous hands and highly legible markings. The chronograph hours and minutes are combined within the totaliser at 12 o’clock, while small seconds and a discreet date display complete the functional layout. Despite the mechanical complexity, the dial remains exceptionally clean and easy to read.
At its heart is the IWC-manufactured Calibre 89361, a self-winding mechanical chronograph movement offering approximately 68 hours of power reserve. The movement incorporates a flyback chronograph function, allowing the chronograph to be stopped, reset and immediately restarted with a single operation. It operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour and is protected by a soft-iron inner case against the effects of magnetic fields.
A convex sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides protects the dial and is specially secured against displacement caused by sudden drops in air pressure. The screw-down crown and 6-bar water resistance further reinforce the watch’s robust construction.
