The Rolex Milgauss Ref. 116400GV is one of the most distinctive professional watches produced by Rolex, combining a fascinating scientific heritage with design elements found nowhere else in the brand’s collection. Originally developed for scientists and engineers working in environments exposed to strong magnetic fields, the Milgauss was engineered to withstand magnetic interference of up to 1,000 gauss.
Presented in a 40mm Oystersteel case, the Ref. 116400GV has the familiar robustness of a Rolex Oyster while maintaining a clean, understated profile. Unlike Rolex’s traditional sports models, there is no rotating bezel or external timing scale, giving the Milgauss a smooth polished bezel and a particularly clean appearance.
The black dial is one of the defining configurations of the reference. Applied hour markers and luminous detailing are complemented by subtle orange accents, while the unmistakable orange lightning-bolt seconds hand provides a direct connection to the original Milgauss design of the 1950s.
Perhaps its most distinctive feature is the green-tinted sapphire crystal — represented by the “GV” designation, derived from “Glace Verte.” The subtle green edge of the crystal creates a unique visual effect around the black dial and became one of the signature characteristics of the modern Milgauss.
Powering the watch is the Rolex Manufacture Calibre 3131, a self-winding mechanical movement developed with enhanced resistance to magnetic interference. The movement is further protected by a ferromagnetic shield within the case, a fundamental element of the Milgauss concept. Power reserve is approximately 48 hours.
The watch is fitted to Rolex’s three-piece Oyster bracelet in Oystersteel, secured by a folding Oysterclasp and incorporating the Easylink comfort-extension system. Its screw-down Twinlock crown and Oyster case provide water resistance to 100 metres, making it a robust and highly practical everyday Rolex.
Discontinued by Rolex in 2023, the Milgauss Ref. 116400GV now occupies an increasingly interesting position within the modern Rolex catalogue. Its black dial, green sapphire crystal, orange lightning-bolt seconds hand and anti-magnetic engineering give it an identity entirely its own, while its discontinued status adds another dimension to its long-term collector appeal.
